There are around over 900,000 Afro-Mexicans in Mexico, mostly Afro-Mexicans live in Oaxaca, Guerrero, Veracruz and Yucatan. First few African slaves brought to Mexico as servants by Hernan Cortes. Later Spanish brought over 200,000 African slaves to Mexico, 1519 to 1821.
The Afro Mexican population today is of very mixed ancestry; many ignore, or have forgotten, the African part of their ancestry. The predominant mainstream Mexican culture has only minor to moderate African influences. African ancestry is still noticeable in small groups such as those in the Costa Chica region in Guerrero, and some other Mexicans may retain phenotypical clues to African ancestry.
